There are new developments in Programs in Bowen Theory to report on. We have two new board members, an updated website and we are newly active on social media. We are happy to announce that with some conversation about Programs in Bowen Theory and how it might grow, Katherine Kott, PhD, and Kathleen Sheffield, MFT agreed to help out and accepted the invitation to join our Board of Directors. With Jan Beaulyn, MFT, Daniel V Papero, LCSW, and myself we are now five. Our board members all have invested many years in learning and applying Bowen theory. You can read their brief biographies on the About page of the website. Talks about the future led us to projects to improve our operations. Our goals are to use our resources better towards the goals of the dissemination and advancement of Bowen theory, and developing new leadership to represent and advance Bowen theory into the future.
Our updated website will be a much more active site for putting forth ideas and news. The updated infrastructure is unseen, but it will facilitate easy maintenance of the site and provides an updated platform for future projects such as offering streaming video from our meetings. The blog page will feature announcements and regular posts related to theory, research and practice. You’ll find blogs on Emotional Cutoff and Bridging it at the bottom of the front page where the most recent blogs can be opened via some colorful buttons. We will blog about ideas and information from our meetings and conversations around the network about topics of interest from the perspective of Bowen theory. The new front page highlights our upcoming events and provides an overview of the resources our site makes available. At this time we feature our Resources link to the wider network around Bowen theory. Twice a year we meet with the Network Program for the Advancement of Bowen Theory in Washington DC. These meetings take place at the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family, the national center that Bowen established with family programs begun in 1959 at Georgetown University. The network meetings are the day after the two major conferences of the year, in the fall and the spring. Education leaders from programs in Bowen theory from around the country and the world attend the network meetings. We will post soon about the international conference in Bowen Theory in Hong Kong, May 17-19. I will be speaking there to an international audience, along with others from the USA, Australia, China, and elsewhere. Programs in Bowen theory is now active on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. We join several other centers teaching Bowen theory in posting and putting a Bowen theory frame around news coming out of society and science. We do this to add to the presence of Bowen theory in conversations about so many issues of importance to families and our communities. We continue to sponsor our conferences, our research projects, and the training seminar. Our upcoming conference is early this year, March 3, 2018. It’s about functioning up when the family is anxious. Dr. Dan Papero will describe family stress and the forces that down regulate individual functioning and how to assist family members in our practices that are getting worn down in anxious systems. Our guest expert is a young and highly accomplished research psychologist, Grant Shields from UC Davis, who has some new observations about physiology that may underlie failures of self-regulation. I will be presenting some of the research we’ve been doing on the eponymous topic of weight loss and how it seems to be regulated by the family system more than by the individual. It should be a really interesting day. Your financial supports helps us maintain our programs for the dissemination and advancement of Bowen theory in service to the human cause. Your donation is appreciated. Look around our new website and check out our meeting March 3, in Santa Rosa, CA. And, Happy New Year. Laura Havstad, PhD Director, Programs in Bowen TheoryAbout
