Online Training Seminar in Bowen Theory 2020 - 2021The Training Seminar in Bowen Theory is for postgraduates seeking expertise in the application of theory in professional practice. The seminar is structured to guide and facilitate learning Bowen theory and its applications. For 2020-2021 the seminar meets on Zoom from 9:30 to 3:30 PT, on the second Friday of the month, for a total of 8 seminar days, October 9 through May 14.
The seminar is modeled on a teaching method devised by Dr. Murray Bowen. The method of teaching and learning is based on principles of differentiation of self and knowledge of emotional systems. The result is a stimulating, open, and respectful process of learning. The Training Seminar in Bowen Family Systems Theory emphasizes the application of theory in participants’ families and work. Each meeting, participants report on their efforts to apply theory in their practices, families, or work systems. The goal of feedback in the seminar is to assist participants in learning to “think systems” in the midst of pressures of the emotional system. The didactic portions of the seminar include video lectures, interviews, and clinical sessions with Murray Bowen and other experts in Bowen theory. The seminar is lead by Laura Havstad, PhD, as part of her clinical practice. She is a clinical and family psychologist and founder of Programs in Bowen Theory. Other faculty include our conference speakers and other clinicians and consultants with special expertise in Bowen family systems theory. Fees are $1200 for the 2020-2021 year. To participate in the seminar there is an application to complete and an interview. Upon acceptance and enrollment a deposit of $150 is due to hold a place in the seminar. Participants are selected based on being in professional practice in good standing, having some understanding of Bowen theory, and having motivation to work towards differentiation of self in their own families.
