From the death of a family member to losing health or a job, individuals vary in how well they adjust to life after death and loss. Research begun by psychologist George Bonanno and carried forward by his students has revealed remarkable similarity in the patterns of resilience and breakdown across many kinds of loss and adversity. The evidence challenges conventional thinking about grief work and assumptions about optimal emotional patterns following loss. We are fortunate to have with us an important contributor to and expert on this body of research and its implications for clinical practice, Dr. Anthony Papa, PhD. Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Death and loss are among the most important nodal points in the life of a family. Families vary in their ability to adjust to death and loss and the difficulty for individuals within the family depends on their position in the emotional patterns of their family system. Relationship variables also determine the potential for a family shock wave following death, when the impact of loss reverberates through the system, potentially impacting the family over succeeding generations.  To address the family system and adjustment to loss from the perspective of Bowen theory, we are fortunate to have with us Dr. Daniel Papero PhD of the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family in Washington, DC.
