Programs in Bowen Theory Mission Statement

Programs in Bowen Theory provides education and  supports the efforts of those using theory to improve emotional functioning in themselves and the families and organizations they participate in and serve. Programs in Bowen Theory also supports efforts of those working towards a science of human behavior.

The Programs in Bowen Theory Story

Programs in Bowen Theory became a nonprofit corporation in 2004. From 1989 to 2004, Laura Havstad, Ph.D sponsored Programs in Bowen Theory and its biannual meetings as well as the annual Clinical Seminar Series in Bowen Theory for which she continues to maintain responsibility.

Dr. Murray Bowen led the first meeting in 1989, and after he died in 1990, Dr. Michael Kerr and Dr. Daniel Papero led the meetings and have kept the programs strongly connected to the center Bowen built at Georgetown University which continues on as the non-profit Bowen Center. Many others from around the country with expertise in the theory have contibuted to the meetings along the way.

Laura Havstad, PhD. founded Programs in Bowen Theory in 1989 as a the one formal program to teach Bowen theory with any depth that has been available in Northern California.
