presents
Fundamentals of Relationship in the
Family, Work Systems, and Clinical Practice
Daniel V. Papero, PhD, LCSW
Saturday, February 23, 2008
9:00am to 4:30pm
Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, California - Salazar 2016
To be human means to be in all kinds of relationships with other people. When those relationships are calm and pleasant, all seems well. But few relationships remain tranquil perpetually. Storms of anxiety and tension sweep through relationship systems. Under these conditions, a solid way of thinking can be a compass through the storm. The day will focus on how people manage themselves in relationship. Differentiation of self, unresolved emotional attachment, the continuous construction of relationship, the challenge of intensity, the force for togetherness and for autonomy, relationship patterns, and other insights provided by the perspective based on Bowen theory will be presented. Lecture, discussion, and clinical video recordings will be used to illustrate basic ideas and their implications for understanding and managing effectively in personal and professional relationships. Clinical examples will include application of Bowen theory with a case of marital difficulty in the context of the pressures of a family business.
Daniel V. Papero: Ph.D., LCSW, is author of Bowen Family Systems Theory, one of theory's basic texts. He is based in Washington, D.C. at the Bowen Center for the Study of the Family/ The Georgetown Family Center, www.thebowencenter.org.
