THEORY AND CLINICAL PRACTICE SEMINAR SERIES IN BOWEN FAMILY SYSTEMS THEORY

“When any key member of an emotional system can control his own emotional reactiveness and accurately observe the functioning of the system and his part in it, and he can avoid counterattacking when he is provoked, and when he can maintain an active relationship with the other key members without withdrawing or becoming silent, the entire system will change in predictable ways”— Murray Bowen

The Theory and Clinical Practice Seminar Series for professionals seeking expertise in Bowen theory will meet seven Fridays, between November 2010 and May 2011 in Sebastopol, California. These small seminars are structured to guide and facilitate learning the Bowen theory, to use theory to develop the ability to see hidden patterns of relationship systems, and to manage oneself and coach others towards the resolution of problems of the human emotional system.

The seminars are led by Laura Havstad, PhD, Director of Programs in Bowen Theory who has taught Bowen theory for many years and sponsored meetings and educational programs since 1989. Mental health professionals, physicians and other health professionals, business, organizational consultants and managers, and clergy looking to improve their understanding and self-regulation in emotional systems have attended the seminar and meetings.

In the seminars, participants present what they are working on and how they are thinking about issues in their work and families. With feedback and coaching, participants gradually learn to “think systems” and see patterns and recognize opportunities to use theory in leading and coaching emotional systems towards better functioning and increased levels of self. Clinical symptoms, relationship problems of conflict, distance and poor functioning are all addressed with systems thinking.

The meetings be on the second Friday of the month in Sebastopol California from 9:30am to 4:30 pm including a lunch break.
